Transport for NSW has chosen SAP as the underlying software in its massive enterprise resource planning (ERP) system consolidation program, and awarded a three-year, $13 million contract for the migration of existing data into the consolidated system.
The agency has been hesitant to reveal details of the mammoth consolidation project, which was given $150 million in funding between 2012 and 2016 in the state government’s 2012 budget.
It late last week awarded the first contract in the multi-year project.
Global data migration solution provider BackOffice Associates will be given $12.8 million over three years to migrate the mass amounts of data located in the transport cluster’s numerous ERP systems into the new solution.
The makeup of the final state ERP environment is still in design, but the department revealed to iTnews it has chosen SAP as the underlying software platform.
“[It] is being designed in accordance with NSW Government standard design templates, which will be enhanced to meet the specific needs of the transport cluster,” a spokesperson said.
BackOffice will design and implement SAP and associated applications with support from “a number of vendors” over the next few years.
Transport declined to detail the scope of the ERP consolidation program or the amount of data needing migration, but a 2012 NSW Commission of Audit report found 130 corporate systems in use across the transport cluster, and recommended reducing that amount to between 8 and 24 to reap savings of $100 million annually.
The agency was born in 2011 in order to house the strategy, policy and corporate functions from Sydney and NSW Trains as well as NSW Roads and Maritime Services, under the supervision of Transport minister Gladys Berejiklian.
