Transport for NSW is set to push more of its workloads into public cloud under a new deal with Amazon Web Services, as it continues to transition away from legacy data centres.
The department recently forked out close to $5 million to the hyperscale provider for a year's worth of IaaS, SaaS and PaaS cloud services.
The deal, which was signed last August, spans the entire transport cluster, including agencies like Sydney Trains, Roads and Maritime Services, NSW Trains and the State Transit Authority.
The department plans to use AWS to host data recovery requirements, temporary non production systems for products and proof of concept work, and offsite back-up requirements.
It is understood to be the largest AWS cloud deal to be signed with a NSW government agency to date, according to iTnews analysis of the state’s tendering website.
A spokesperson told iTnews the contract is an extension of an existing 2016 deal with AWS, but declined to elaborate on the details of the contract which there is no public record of.
The department currently uses a blend of public and on-premise/private cloud solutions to support its various IT systems, including the NSW government's GovDC data centres.
“For internally hosted, most systems reside in GovDC and externally hosted systems are residing in a range of public and private clouds of which AWS is one,” the spokesperson said.
“Some systems that were hosted on premise in various data centres are progressively being transitioned to AWS, other cloud platforms, and GovDC.”
GovDC hosts the majority of the cluster's data and applications following the next generation infrastructure services (NGIS) project, which has since been renamed making IT work for you.
The spokesperson would not be drawn on which other public cloud providers the agency was hosting workloads with.
“TfNSW undertook a Request for Proposal for particular workloads and Amazon Web Services was successful in this instance,” the spokesperson told iTnews.
“Other workloads continue to be placed with other cloud providers and our internally managed provider in GovDC.”
Earlier this year AWS became the second hyperscale provider to be certified to carry protected-level Australian government data across 42 services in its Sydney region.
