Monash University has appointed Dan Maslin as its first chief information security officer (CISO), following an extensive search.
Maslin, who joins from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), will work closely with the university’s Data Protection and Privacy Office, Office of General Council, and other key functions.
The role consolidates existing functions at the uni in a bid to continue efforts to build security culture and awareness, strengthen security monitoring and incident management, and optimise the university’s IT risk posture.
Maslin spent the last three years as RACV’s cyber security manager, identifying as CISO, where he led and completed a significant three-year security transformation program.
He has more than two decades of enterprise IT experience across a number of roles and sectors, including Coles, Medibank, EastLink operator ConnectEast, and RSPCA Victoria.

“While this is a new role, it represents the formalisation of our existing function and recognition of the university’s ongoing commitment to the online safety of its students, staff and community.”

Maslin will commence in the role on 11 November 2019 and will report to Finlayson, who has been acting as Monash’s interim CIO since Trevor Woods decamped to the University of Sydney.
